Workshop – Authentic Historical Inquiry: Impacting Learning through the use of SOURCES
Dr. Scott M. Waring is a Professor and the Program Coordinator for the Social Science Education Program at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, United States of America. He earned his B.S. and M.A. in Education from the University of South Florida and his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in Social Studies Education, with a minor in Instructional Technology. He teaches courses at the undergraduate and graduate level in social science methodology, research, and theory. While at the University of Central Florida, Dr. Waring has won the Award for Excellence in Research, the Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award, the Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award, the Excellence in Academic Advising Award, the Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Academic Advising for the University of Central Florida, and the Agnes Crabtree International Relations Award. He is the current Chair for the Teacher Education and Professional Development Committee of the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS), Chair of the Florida College and University Faculty Assembly (FLCUFA – the higher education research affiliate of the Florida Council for the Social Studies), and the Program Chair for the SOURCES Conference. Dr. Waring serves as the Editor for Social Studies and the Young Learner, Editor for Teaching with Primary Sources Journal, and the Interdisciplinary Feature Editor for Social Studies Research and Practice, and he is currently editing two textbooks to be jointly published by the National Council for the Social Studies and the Library of Congress. He has served as a member of the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) House of Delegates, on the Executive Board for the College and University Faculty Assembly (CUFA – the higher education research affiliate of NCSS), as Editor for Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education – Social Studies, and as the Chair for the Society for Information Technology & Teacher Education’s (SITE) Social Studies Special Interest Group. He has over 200 conference and workshop presentations and has written or co-written grants totaling over $4 million, including a Teaching with Primary Sources grant from the Library of Congress, a Fulbright-Hays grant (Czech Republic), a Fulbright Specialist award (Bulgaria), a Fulbright Scholar award (Czech Republic), and three United States Department of Education Teaching American History grants. Dr. Waring has published two books (has three more under contract and in progress) and over forty journal articles and book chapters focusing on the teaching and learning of history, teaching with primary sources, and the utilization of technology in teaching.

The speaker will outline the stages of the SOURCES Framework for Teaching with Primary and Secondary Sources and demonstrate how educators can scaffold instruction so that learners can be afforded authentic and engaging opportunities to experience historical inquiry in K-20 classrooms.
